The topic of navigating complexity and uncertainty is not a new topic. We’ve been talking about the importance of this for a long time. Now we’re confronted with something very real and uncertainty abounds in a very visceral way and it is time to turn our theoretical words into action.
The only certainty we have available to us at present is that COVID- 19 is a humanitarian crisis in which business and society need to be resilient, agile and as prepared as possible. With the magnitude of this crisis, it is clear that these qualities will stay in demand long after health is restored.

As a starting point, here are five leadership priorities that should be on your agenda as you navigate and lead an organisation, a team, people or yourself.
What is obvious is that the call for Leadership is more pronounced than it has ever been. What’s less obvious is how to navigate your Leadership to suit the current context. Your Leadership presence of how you guide and communicate with your teams during this period is critical.

Build your Resilience
Our global economic system has shown itself to be very fragile. As leaders, you have an opportunity to think about how to build your business or team going forward, knowing that this isn’t the last hurdle to navigate and the world is going to be different going forward.
Leadership teams can ‘make or break’ during challenging times. The opportunity exists to galvanize teams so that cohesion, collaboration, tough conversations and big picture thinking takes place in ways that will set your organisation up for success in both the short and longer-term. In this article, we talk about our 3 Horizon’s process which we facilitate that gives clarity in a time of uncertainty.
The impact of our new ways of connecting will be felt. Staying conscious around how we organise and plan for connection is paramount. We are witnessing the embracing of our digital world and the opportunities it presents as well as potential feelings of disconnect in real-time.
The knock-on effect of having physical distance (literally) between people has a psychological effect. Digital connections need to be mindfully crafted to overcome this.
What this means is that your virtual meetings need to:
- Have a specific rhythm and cadence – some formal, and others informal.
- Need to be planned in various formats and in more creative ways with more frequency.
- They need to have set disciplines of meeting practices for various formats.
Care and Capacity
Some activities may not be possible as ‘business unusual’ persists. We urge you to keep (or potentially start) activities that promote healthy ways of living during this time. This range of activities could include things like:
- Better sleep
- Eating well
- Keeping up with your exercise routine, meditating etc.
Whilst this sounds obvious, we’ve seen that during turbulent times people’s capacity can take a knock and, as leaders, we need to be building our capacity personally and professionally.
Learning and development for those people who are experiencing ‘lower activity’ than normal is an excellent way to optimally develop people.
You should be thinking hard about your skills and capacity-building agenda for yourself and your people. The upside of doing this is that it shows genuine care and interest in a way that serves the individual, the business and society.
